iPhone won’t let you delete photos? Causes and fixes
Short answer
If your iPhone won’t let you delete photos, the most common reason is that they were synced from a computer with Finder or iTunes – those can only be removed from the computer. Other causes: the photo is in someone else’s shared album, it’s from Messages, the library is still syncing with iCloud, or the storage is completely full. Restarting and updating iOS fixes most temporary glitches.
1. Photos synced from a computer (no trash icon)
Photos copied to the iPhone with Finder (Mac) or iTunes/Apple Devices (Windows) live in albums marked “From My Mac” or “From My PC”. The iPhone has no delete button for them. To remove them, connect the iPhone to that computer, open the device’s Photos tab, deselect the albums or turn off syncing, and sync again. No app on the iPhone can delete these photos – including Gallery Guru.
2. Shared albums and the Shared Library
In a Shared Album, only the person who added a photo (or the album owner) can delete it. If someone else shared it, you can only unsubscribe from the album. In an iCloud Shared Photo Library, deleting a photo removes it for everyone in the library – check whether you are looking at the Personal or the Shared Library view.
3. Photos from Messages (“Shared with You”)
Photos that appear under Shared with You are stored in the Messages conversation, not in your library. Delete them in the chat (long-press the photo → Delete), or save them first if you want to keep them.
4. Photos that come back after deleting
With iCloud Photos on, a deletion has to sync. If the photos reappear, check that you’re online and signed in, open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos to see whether syncing is paused, and give it time on Wi-Fi. If you deleted them on another device that is offline, the change arrives when that device connects.
5. Storage completely full
When there is almost no space left, iOS can struggle to finish even a delete. Free a little space first – offload a large app or delete a long video – then try again. More in iPhone storage full.
6. Temporary glitches
- Restart the iPhone.
- Install the latest iOS update (Settings → General → Software Update).
- Try deleting a smaller batch – a few hundred at a time instead of thousands.
- Recently Deleted and Hidden are locked: unlock them with Face ID or your passcode first.
Once deleting works again
For the photos you can delete, Gallery Guru makes the clean-up fast: your library split into months, swipe left to delete and right to keep, then review and delete everything at once. Like the Photos app, it can’t delete photos synced from a computer or other people’s shared photos.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no trash icon on some photos?
They were synced from a computer with Finder or iTunes. Remove them by changing the photo sync settings on that computer and syncing again.
Why do deleted photos keep coming back on my iPhone?
Usually iCloud Photos hasn’t finished syncing the deletion, or another device restored them from its Recently Deleted. Stay on Wi-Fi, check that syncing isn’t paused and give it time.
Can I delete photos someone shared with me?
Not from their shared album – only the person who added them can. You can save copies to your library and delete those, or leave the album.
