iCloud storage full? What to do and how to free space
Short answer
If your iCloud storage is full, open Settings → [your name] → iCloud to see what uses it. Usually it is Photos, followed by device backups and Messages. With iCloud Photos turned on, every photo or video you delete on your iPhone is also removed from iCloud – so cleaning up your camera roll frees iCloud storage too. Delete old device backups you no longer need, then empty “Recently Deleted”.
See what fills your iCloud
Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud. The bar shows Photos, Backups, Messages, iCloud Drive and other apps; tap Manage Account Storage (or Storage) for details. The free plan has 5 GB – a single year of photos is often more.
1. Clean up iCloud Photos – from your iPhone
With iCloud Photos, your library is the same on every device: delete a photo on the iPhone and it’s gone from iCloud too (after 30 days in “Recently Deleted”, or as soon as you empty it). So the fastest way to shrink iCloud is to clean up your camera roll:
- Delete large videos first – how to find them.
- Delete screenshots in bulk – here’s how.
- Go through the rest month by month with Gallery Guru: swipe left to delete, right to keep, review, delete. Deletions sync to iCloud and all your devices.
2. Delete old device backups
Backups of old iPhones or iPads often stay in iCloud for years. Under Manage Account Storage → Backups, select a device you no longer use and delete its backup. For your current iPhone, you can exclude large apps from the backup.
3. Messages, iCloud Drive and other apps
Messages in iCloud keeps photos and videos from chats. Delete large conversations or attachments, or set Keep Messages to 1 year. Check iCloud Drive for old downloads and large files.
“Your iCloud storage is full” email: real or scam?
Many “iCloud storage full” emails and texts are phishing. They warn that your photos will be deleted, offer “50 GB for free” or a discount, and link to a page that asks for your Apple Account password or card details. Apple does not send such offers, and a full iCloud does not delete your photos.
- Don’t tap links in the message. Check the real status in Settings → [your name] → iCloud instead.
- If it says your storage is fine, delete the message.
- If you already entered your password, change it right away and check your payment details.
When iCloud really is full, nothing is deleted: new photos and videos simply stop uploading, and iCloud Backup stops until you free space or upgrade.
Careful: turning off iCloud Photos does not free space
Turning off iCloud Photos on your iPhone does not delete anything from iCloud – the library stays there. And deleting photos in iCloud while iCloud Photos is on deletes them on your iPhone too. Make sure you keep a copy (computer, external drive) of anything you want to keep before deleting.
Frequently asked questions
If I delete photos from my iPhone, are they deleted from iCloud?
Yes, when iCloud Photos is turned on. They first go to Recently Deleted (on all devices) for 30 days and are then removed for good.
How do I delete photos from my iPhone but keep them in iCloud?
With iCloud Photos on, deleting always syncs. Use “Optimize iPhone Storage” instead: the full-resolution originals stay in iCloud and only small versions are stored on the phone. All options, step by step.
What happens when my iCloud storage is full?
Nothing gets deleted. New photos and videos stop uploading to iCloud Photos, iCloud Backup stops, and iCloud Drive and Mail can’t store new files until you free space or buy more.
Is it better to buy more iCloud storage?
If you want to keep everything, yes. But most libraries contain thousands of photos nobody will look at again – cleaning up first often means you can stay on a smaller plan.
